Awesome Facts About the Land Rover Defender – Part 2

The Land Rover Experience was formed in 1990. It took over from the Demonstration Team established by Roger Crathorne to showcase the abilities of the vehicle around the world. It is currently operating from 33 centres worldwide, which include North America, Scandinavia, South Africa, the Middle East, China, and Russia.

The Defender was featured in the 1966 movie Born Free, which told the story of Elsa the Lion. The Born Free Foundation, its founder Virginia McKenna OBE, and her son Will Travers OBE, still use Defenders today. Mother and son fitted parts to Defender 2,000,000, which recently sold at an auction for GBP 400,000 (AUD 808,364.42).

Since 1948, two original parts have been fitted to all Soft Top Series Land Rovers and Defenders. These are the hood cleats and the underbody support strut.

Each Defender is made of more than 7,000 individual parts

Land Rover production line workers gave their own nicknames for the parts of the Defender. They call door hinges “pigs ears” and the dashboard “lamb’s chops”.

The Jaguar Land Rover plant in Solihull still produces the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, Jaguar XE, and Jaguar F-PACE models despite the end of Defender production.
