According to a study initiated by Land Rover and the Institute of Directors (IoD) with organisational psychologist Sir Cary Cooper, business leaders come up with their best ideas inside their cars. The study involves surveying more than 900 CEOs, directors, and senior managers all over the world and aims to find out the best environment for inspiring creative ideas.

Results showed that “84% of business leaders believe their environment is important for enabling creative thought”. The respondents listed the following factors as being vital for creative environment: comfortable seating, natural light and an absence of noise. In creating the best ideas, the required psychological conditions are comfort and the absence of stress.

Almost one in respondents questioned revealed that they spent more than 25% of their working week in the car. According to Sir Cooper, “The findings of this study suggest that cars present an opportunity for both the right psychological and the right physical conditions for creativity. Creative thoughts will often come to us at a time when we least expect them – when we are not thinking about the problem”.
