How Manual Transmission Works

Gearboxes. Check this out for how a manual works.

The most common gearbox is the R380 in the Disco 1,2, and Defenders of the same year. They are good quality and go for a lot of miles.

The trick is- if you hear a bearing noise (a whine) coming from the box, bring it in and don’t keep driving it. Once a bearing allows the shafts to start flogging around inside it breaks gears and the repair becomes a lot more expensive.

We use a thin oil in them- actually a very high quality automatic transmission oil. Thick gear oil ends up being stirred in the box by shaft rotation, and manages to put torque on things that should be stopped when the clutch disengages, making 2nd gear hard to select. It is much worse in Canberra’s winter when oil gets thicker still. Usually changing gets easier as the gearbox warms up with thick oil in it.
