Land Rover Sues Jiangling Motors for Producing Evoque “Clone”

Jaguar Land Rover took legal action against Chinese carmaker Jiangling Motors’s production of the Landwind X7, which is an alleged copycat of JLR’s best-selling Range Rover Evoque. The X7, which was revealed at the Guangzhou motor show in November 2014, looks very much like the Evoque, to the point that casual observers may have a hard time telling them apart.

Ralf Speth, Chief Executive of Jaguar Land Rover, claims that the Chinese company has committed intellectual property theft and that JLR will take the necessary actions to protect its design.

JLR’s move is viewed as a landmark case that can encourage Western car manufacturers to sue Chinese companies for cloning designs. Copyright laws are not so enforced in China and Western companies face the hazards of imitation when doing business in the country. Challenging local firms in China is very risky, which is why foreign companies are hesitant to seek legal action on cases such as this one.
